Most of us think we know who we are, in terms of our ancestry, but do we really know?! All my life, I believed I was about a quarter Native, about a quarter German, and about 50% French. As it turns out, I was way off.
For my last birthday, I received one of those at-home tests from Ancestry.com. I sent off my small sample of spit and waited to hear back, although to be honest, I wasn't expecting any surprises. According to my DNA, I am:
48% English, Welsh, & Northwestern European
42% Indigenous American
6% German
And possibly:
2% Swedish
1% Eastern European/ Russian
1% Italian
I have to admit, I was caught offguard slightly, but pleasantly surprised and somewhat relieved to finally and officially know my true heritage. Although it doesn't necessarily change anything for me, it's just nice to know the reach of my roots, to discover where my ancestors were born. I don't know how to explain it, but I feel a little more ... whole, now.
